Biographical Note
Mac Amhlaoibh (McAuley, McAulay), Brian (Barney Bhriain, The 'Bhréin) (1850-1941): Born in Ballyemon, county Antrim, in June 1850, his father's name was Brian Mac Amhlaoibh also. He moved to Glenariffe, county Antrim, before the age of six and he attended school there. He was a farmer but he also spent 11 years in the merchant marine. He married Elizabeth Black of Legdrina on 30 November 1886. They seem to have had three sons, Patrick, James and Daniel, who were also known as Irish speakers. He died in Glenariffe on 8 March 1941 and is buried there. For folklore collected from him see, for example, Seosamh Watson, 'Séamus Ó Duilearga's Antrim Notebooks – I: Texts', Zeitschrift fuer celtische Philologie 40 (1984), 74-117, and Seosamh Watson, 'Séamus Ó Duilearga's Co. Antrim Notebooks', Éigse 20 (1984), 187-211. A good deal of information about Brian Mac Amhlaoibh, his forbears and his family has been made available by Dr Ciarán Ó Duibhín at http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~oduibhin/doegen/. Further references are to be found there also regarding the folkloric material collected from him.
