Biographical Note
Ó Murchadha (Murphy), Éamonn (Ned, Edward) (c.1875-?): Éamonn Ó Murchadha was born in Cahernagollum, Ballinrobe, county Mayo, around 1875. He attended the National School in Neale, county Mayo. His parents were Patrick and Mary Murphy. Like his father, Éamonn was a farmer. The family was living in Cahernagollum during the censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001064051/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002957875/]. He hadn’t married by 1911. Among the material collected from him in the National Folklore Collection is an account of his forebears ('Muinntir Mhurchadha', NFC, Vol. 524, 308.): 'Insa t-sean aimsir an áit ar tóigeadh mo dhaoine-sa in-aice le Áth Cinn. Tháinic siad as Áth Cinn go Fuinnsineach baile Chuisleáin hunga, & as sin go baile Chuisleáin na h-Éille, & as baile Chaisleáin na h-Éille go Cathair na gColum.' When Proinnsias de Búrca visited him in 1938, he was living at home with an older sister, his wife, whom he says was around 40, and their four (or five) children. Éamonn is described in de Búrca’s account as a big tall man. A small amount of folkloric material collected from him is housed in the National Folklore Collection. Proinnsias de Búrca has an account of him in his diary (NFC, Vol. 500, 12/2/1938).
