Ó Ruairc, Pádraig
Biographical Note
Ó Ruairc (Rourke), Pádraig (Patrick, Peatsan, Piaras) (c.1867-?): Born in Cloghane, county Kerry, to Jackie Ruairc and Nell (or Siobhán) (Phaidí Chathaoir) Callaghan, he received no formal education and, like his father, became a fisherman. According to the Personal-Bogen form, his mother came from the vicinity of Mount Brandon, and that is where he was living during the censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000859726/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003929610/]. He was married twice: he is described as a 'widower' in the 1901 census, but is married to Mary Rourke in the 1911 census. From the census also it can be gleaned that he had at least three children in his first marriage (Michael, John and William). Three more were born in the second marriage before 1911, but only two of those survived (Patrick and Mary). At the time of his death, all of his children had gone to America, except for two sons. Pádraig died at the beginning of March, 1936, aged almost 75. He provided Seán Ó Loingsigh with some folkloric material, which was published in Béaloideas in December 1927. Further material collected from him is available in the National Folklore Collection, UCD, including biographical material collected by Seán Ó Dubhda.
