Biographical Note
Ó Loingsigh (Ó Luínse, Lynch), Amhlaoibh (Humphrey, Free, Fruí) (1872-1947): One of the great traditional storytellers of his day, he was born 8 December 1872 in Coolea, county Cork, and he was living there with his family during the censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000546894/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001973009/]. His father was Conor (or Canaí Mháire Ní Dhuinnín) and his mother was Neil Ní Dhuinnín of Cleady, county Kerry. He had two brothers and seven sisters. He attended school in Coolea. He inherited his father’s land and married Máire Ní Ríordáin (Mary Riordan) of Cloontycarthy, Kilnamartery, county Cork. They had two sons and two daughters. Amhlaoibh won prizes in storytelling at the Inchigeelagh Feis (1899) and Ballyvourney Feis (1900). He was the first ever winner of the storytelling competition at Oireachtas na Gaeilge in 1901. He died 24 January 1947. The Folklore Council of Ireland published two collections of folkloric material collected from him: Seán and Donncha Ó Cróinín (eds.), Scéalaíocht Amhlaoibh Í Luínse (Dublin, 1971) and Seán and Donncha Ó Cróinín (eds.), Seanachas Amhlaoibh Í Luínse (Dublin, 1980). A good deal of material collected from him is to found at the National Folklore Collection, UCD.
