Biographical Note

Ó Céilleachair (Ó Céileachair, Kelleher), Domhnall (Dónal, Dónall Bán, Daniel) (1871-1950): One of seventeen children of Pádraig Ó Céilleachair (Patrick Kelleher) and Nóra Ní Loingsigh (Hanora Kelleher), he was born 1 November 1871 in Coolea, county Cork, and was living there with his family during the censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000546874/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001972983/]. Domhnall went to primary school in Coolea and attended night school there as an adult also. He was one of only three of the children in his family who didn't emigrate and he inherited his father's farm. He married Siobhán Ní Mhulláin of Scrahanagown in 1908. They had four sons and two daughters. One of his sons was the writer Donncha Ó Céileachair. Domhnall died on Saint Brigid's Day 1950. Folkloric material collected from him is stored in the National Folklore Collection, UCD. Further information about his life may be found in his autobiography, Scéal Mo Bheatha (Dublin, 1940 [1941]). There is a plaque commemorating Domhnall Bán outside the house in which he was raised in the townland of Murnaghbeg.
