Ó Cearbhaill, Tomás
Biographical Note
Ó Cearbhaill (Carrol, Carroll), Tomás (Thomas, Tom) (1860-?): Tomás Ó Cearbhaill, farmer, was born in Letterbrone, county Sligo in 1860, to Tom Carroll, gamekeeper and farmer, and Bridget Quinn. He was baptized on February 29, 1860. He received no formal education. Apart from periods spent working in England, he appears to have lived his whole life in Letterbrone. He was living there during the censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003878870/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003878870/]. He got much of his folkloric material from his mother, who died in 1907. A small amount of folkloric material collected from him is housed in the National Folklore Collection, UCD. He appears in Liam Mac Coisdealbha’s diary in the National Folklore Collection (Vol. 427, 25/11/1937; 29/11/1937).
