Biographical Note
Ó Síocháin (Ó Síothcháin, Sheehan), Conchúr (Conchubhar, Cornelius) (1866-1941): He was born 18 February 1866 on Clear Island, county Cork. He received primary education on the island and was living there during the censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000591721/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002020359/]. He was a farmer and a fisherman. He was also a craftsman. A sugan (straw-rope) chair by him is housed in the National Museum. He never married. He died 3 February 1941. Folkloric and musical pieces by Conchúr Ó Síocháin appear in An Lóchrann, 1930-31. Material collected from him is found also in the National Folklore Collection, UCD. Some biographical information relating to him is gathered on Ainm.ie at http://www.ainm.ie/Bio.aspx?ID=116. Further information may be found in Seanchas Chléire (Dublin, 1940), which contains material collected from him by Ciarán and Mícheál Ó Síocháin. A translation by Riobárd P. Breathnach was published under the title The man from Cape Clear (Dublin, 1975).
