Biographical Note
Ó Síocháin (Ó Síothcháin, Sheehan), Conchúr (Conchubhar, Cornelius) (1866-1941): He was born 18 February 1866 on Clear Island, county Cork. He received primary education on the island and was living there during the censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000591721/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002020359/]. He was a farmer and a fisherman. He was also a craftsman. A sugan (straw-rope) chair by him is housed in the National Museum. He never married. He died 3 February 1941. Folkloric and musical pieces by Conchúr Ó Síocháin appear in An Lóchrann, 1930-31. Material collected from him is found also in the National Folklore Collection, UCD. Further information may be found in Seanchas Chléire (Dublin, 1940), which contains material collected from him by Ciarán and Mícheál Ó Síocháin. A translation by Riobárd P. Breathnach was published under the title The man from Cape Clear (Dublin, 1975).
