Biographical Note

Mac Coitir (a Coitir, 'ac Coitir, Cotter), Diarmuid (Diarmaid, Jeremiah, Jerry Chrothúir Jer) (1880-1959): He was born 7 May 1880 in Ballingeary, county Cork. His father was Cornelius Cotter, a farmer, and his mother was Johanna McCarthy. He attended school locally. His family is recorded in the Censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000543140/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001966266/]. Diarmuid became involved with the annual poetic gathering, Dámhscoil Mhúscraí (founded 1926). He composed songs and had folkloric material published in various journals. Two of his stories appear on Sgéalta Andeas, published by Gael Linn. He won prizes at Oireachtas na Gaeilge in 1902-4, 1914 agus 1954-5. He married Julia Ní Chéileachair of Slievereagh, Ballyvourney, and moved to her family's farm. They had two sons. Diarmuid died on 9 July 1959.
