Biographical Note
Turraoin (Traoin, Terry), Mícheál (Míhál, Maidhc Dháith) (1878-1963): Mícheál Turraoin was born 20 March 1878 in Park, Knockanpower Lower, in the parish of Ringagonagh, county Waterford. His father was Dáibhidh Turraoin (David Terry), a fisherman, and his mother was Siobhán Ní Mhuirighthe (Johanna Murray). Having been evicted from their home, the family moved in with a neighbour, Siobhán Ní Churraoin, for a number of years until they got a house in Ballynagaul Beg. Mícheál never learnt to read or write. He spent periods fishing, herding, doing farm labour, working on the roads, and working as a servant. He was in Ballycurreen, county Waterford, working as a farm labourer for the census of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001246551/]. He married Bríd Ní Bheaglaoich in 1901, and moved into her house. They were living in Ballymacart Lower during the census of 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003477745/]. They had fifteen children. Mícheál got employment as a traditional storyteller and caretaker in Coláiste na Rinne. He died 13 October 1963, in St. Joseph's Home in Dungarvan. For folkloric material collected from him, as well as further biographical information, see Mícheál Ó Cionnfhaolaidh, Beatha Mhichíl Turraoin, maille le sceulta agus seanachas (Dublin, 1956), and Máirtín Verling (ed.), Leabhar Mhaidhc Dháith: scéalta agus seanchas ón Rinn (Dingle, 2007).
