Transcript

Ó, beidh ríl againn, beidh ríl againn,
Beidh ríl againn Dé Domhnaigh,
Beidh ríl againn cois taobh an chnoic
Is an cailín deas á foghlaim.

Táimse in[1] grá le cailín deas,
Táimse in grá gan dabht léi
Táimse in grá le cailín deas,
Is pósfad í Dé Domhnaigh.

Translation

Oh, we will have a reel, we will have a reel,
We will have a reel on Sunday,
We will have a reel by the side of the hill
And the nice girl learning it.

I'm in love with a nice girl,
I am undoubtedly in love with her,
I'm in love with a nice girl,
And I will marry her on Sunday.

Footnotes

Examples of the form in preceding a consonant are found in Waterford also. Cf. Seán Ua Súilleabháin, 'Gaeilge na Mumhan', in Kim McCone et al. (eds), Stair na Gaeilge (Maynooth, 1994), 479-538: 506. (Back)

Commentary

The present informant, Fionán Mac Coluim, published three verses of this song under the pseudonym 'Finghín na Leamhna', in Duanaireacht do leanbhaíbh (Dublin, 1914), 16-7. He included a fourth verse in the version he published in Cosa buidhe árda: cuid a haon (Dublin, 1924), 26-7. A shortened version was included in Donnchadh Ua Braoin, An cuaichín ceoil (Dublin, Belfast, Cork, c. 1930), 11. The melody has been used for many other humorous, playful and light songs. For example, 'Pósadh an Phaoraigh' as sung elsewhere in the Doegen collection is set to the same basic melody. See Breandán Breathnach, Ceol rince na hÉireann II (Dublin, 1976), 167-8, and P.W. Joyce, Irish music and song ([Dublin], 1901), 21-2, for other examples of songs set to this popular tune.
