Ó Néill, Pádraig

Biographical Note

Ó Néill (O'Neill), Pádraig (Pádhraic, Patrick) (c.1867-?): Pádraig Ó Néill was born in Ardgaineen, Claregalway, county Galway, around 1867. He appears to have lived there his whole life. He received no formal education. Like his father, he was a farmer. ‘Patrick O’Neill’ was living with his family in Ardgaineen during the censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000848521/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000848521/]. According to the censuses, he and his wife, Margaret, whom he married around 1895 had three sons and one daughter in 1911. Ó Néill lived until he was at least 74 (c. 1941), as folkloric material was collected from him in that year. Further folkloric material collected from him is available in the National Folklore Collection, UCD. 'Seán Mac Éil', which Pat Craven had got from 'Pádhraic Ó Néill', was published in Ar Aghaidh (April, 1933). 'Grádh Geal Mo Chroidhe', composed by ‘Pádraig Ua Néill’, was published in An Gaodhal (Iúil, 1901).
