Dh'fhiafraigh sé dhe cheann des na seirbhísigh dé an ceol é seo.
Dúirt sé sin, "Tháinig do dheartháir abhaile. Agus mharaibh t'athair an gamhain ramhar dó de dheasca é theacht slán chuige."
Ghlac fearg é sin. Ní raghadh sé isteach. Tháinig an t-athair amach. Labhair sé leis. Dh'fhiafraigh sé dhe, "A mhic, dé chúis ná raghfá isteach agus do dheartháir a dh'fheiscint?"
Dh'fhreagair sé sin é - dh'fhreagair an mac é: "A athair," ar sé sin, "tá mise i t'fhochairse na blianta so go léir agus níor dhiúltaigh mé riamh d'aon ní a dhéanamh dhuit. Nach[1] an mac so a dh'imigh uait agus do chaith a chuid go léir ar striapachaibh, mharaigh tú an gamhain ramhar dó. Níor thug tú oiread le mionnán domhsa chun compord a dhéanamh idir[2] mé féin agus mo dhaoine muinteartha."
"A mhic," arsa an t-athair, "dh'fhanais i m'fhochair i gcónaí. Is leat a bhfuil agam. Is ait liom dé an chúis ná beadh áthas ort do dheartháir a dh'fheiscint nuair a bhí sé marbh. Tá sé beo. Chailleadh é agus fuaireadh é."
Translation
He asked one of the servants what this music was for.
He said, "Your brother came home. And your father killed the fatted calf for him because of his safe return to him."
He became angry. He would not go in. The father came out. He spoke to him. He asked him, "Son, why wouldn't you go in to see your brother?"
He answered him - the son answered him: "Father," he said, "I am with you all these years and I never refused to do anything for you. But this son who left you and who spent all his share on whores, you killed the fatted calf for him. You didn't give me so much as a kid goat so that I could make merry with my friends."
"Son," said the father, "you have stayed with me always. What is mine is yours. I find it strange that you would not be happy to see your brother when he has been dead. He is alive. He was lost and is found."

Commentary
This telling of the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) (together with parts 1 and 2 from the same speaker) is based on a version supplied to the speaker in advance. See Peadar Ua Laoghaire, Na cheithre Soisgéil as an dTiomna Nua (Dublin, 1915), 191-2. The speaker was encouraged to adapt the text to his own dialect.
