Transcript

Bhí buachaill am amháin agus fuaigh sé (a) suirí le cailín agus shíl sé gur cailín ar dóigh a bhí inti. Agus nuair a tháinig sé ar ais, arsa seisean:

"Tá aye aici agus tá no aici,
Agus ar ndóigh go bhfuil for what? aici,
Agus (cur) suas leis an uaisle,
Tá stiall den chotún bhreac uirthi."

Translation

There was once a boy and he went courting a girl and he thought she was a great girl. And when he returned, he said:

"She has aye and she has no,
And of course she has for what?,
And keeping(?) up with the nobility,
She has a sash of dotted cotton on."

Commentary

The short verse which is introduced and recited here appears to be taken from a song entitled 'Máire Mhór'. More recent versions have slightly different lyrics, but retain the same structure. For example, a version by Colm Ó Méalóid from Conamara has the following lyrics:

Bhí yes aici 's bhí no aici,
Is ar ndóigh bhí what not aici.
Is murach lucht a' Bhéarla,
Nach gcuirfinn Dandy cap uirthi.

(Colm Ó Méalóid, Céad slán le Camus, Cló Iar-Chonnacht, 1985).

This item is transcribed also in Heinrich Wagner and Colm Ó Baoill, Linguistic atlas and survey of Irish dialects (4 vols, Dublin, 1958-69), vol. 4, 286.
